And another one bites the dust. Last week, the New York City Council voted 43-8 to restrict the use of ecigs. Despite protest from vapers, activist groups, and e-cigarette manufactures and stores, New York banned ecigs. People will no longer be able to use them anywhere they like. Once the ban starts, ecigs will be treated like traditional cigarettes, and may be used only where analogs can be smoked.
My mom hides a bag of chocolate bars in the closet. My dad can’t keep his hands off the cherry pie. My aunt always has bubble gum in her purse, and my grandma would have had strawberry milkshakes every day if we let her.
With the popularity of ecigs increasing, so are the “haters”. A lot of people take everything the media says as fact. They rely on their newspapers or news radio to give them right information, the truth. Well when news reporters talk about electronic cigarettes, people listen. A lot of people have talked about how ecig companies make fun flavors to appeal to kids. I’m here to set the record straight.
Vapers, as you have probably noticed, proposed ecig bans are popping up everywhere! New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and several members on the NYC Council plan to quickly pass an ordinance that would ban ecigs from being used everywhere tobacco cigarettes are banned. Vapers would be treated like smokers again.
We need to protect ourselves. Some companies that don’t allow their employees to vape inside are going to make their vapers go outside and stand in the same area as the smokers. These are the very people that we’ve all been trying to avoid in our quest to stop smoking. We used to be those smokers, pushed to the side, away from everyone. Then we mustered up the courage to turn to ecigs, and were able to step away from that. We put down the tobacco cigs, and picked up the ecig. No smoke, no smell, no ash, no mess. We vape everywhere we’re allowed. We vape at home, in the car, at the grocery store, and at the restaurants and bars that are cool with it. Now, if all these places suddenly say “forget it – you’re outside again”, what are you going to do? You’re going to be pissed. Here you spent money and time, researching, buying and switching over.
What will you do? You need to tell your employer that you should not be forced into the same areas where the smokers have to go. You don’t want to be breathing in that second-hand smoke, smelling those awful cigarettes, (and if you’re new to vaping) get tempted to start back up again!
Some companies have smoking rooms. When I worked at Meijer many years ago, we had a smoking room. When it was cold out, we all went into that room, next to the break room and puffed away. It smelled horrible. Now, say Meijer were to ban their employees from using ecigs inside at work. Where would they have to go? Outside? In the same room as the smokers? That’s not fair. Would they build a room just for vapers? Unlikely.
Vapers, stand up for your right to vape! If smokers and non-smokers get rights, we should too! Share this with all your vaper buddies and make sure they stand up for their right to vape!
These days, it seems like governments everywhere are proposing ecig bans. It’s not just happening in the U.S. either. The latest proposition comes from the European Union. If the ban goes through, ALL ecigs on sale in Britain would be banned and taken from store shelves.
Tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 26) Chicago’s City Council is going to introduce an ordinance that would expand the city’s regulation of tobacco products to include ecigs. It would prohibit their use in smoke-free areas. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Will Burns and Alderman Edward Burke are backing the legislation. If the ordinance passes, Chicago would become the first major city to regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products.
Please note: This event is now over. Please check out “Trade a pack for a cold turkey sammie?” for a rundown of our event and others!
We’re getting ready for tomorrow’s 3rd annual Trade-A-Pack event! Beginning at 9am, any smoker can come into our Lounge to trade their pack of smokes for a free ecig kit. The kit includes a battery, a USB charger, and a cartomizer. You choose either menthol or tobacco-flavored cart. Our Smokeless Lounge will be open until 8pm on Thursday so anyone who can’t make it until after work will still be able to take part.
