COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which is a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. Chronic tobacco smoking is the leading cause of COPD. November is COPD Awareness Month, sponsored by the US COPD Coalition. In addition to the month-long educational campaign, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease organizes World COPD Day annually to improve awareness of the disease around the world. This year it falls on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 around the theme “It’s Not Too Late.” Health care professionals, educators, and patient groups organize activities to help educate the public and offer ways to manage COPD.
