I went on a cruise a few years ago...there was a "big deal" about buying tobacco and liquor. "duty-free....well they didn't have "my brand"...so, I didn't check prices on tobacco...but THINKING I was getting a great deal, I splurged and bought a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka...I really don't buy alcohol other than a bottle of wine here and there...so after I got home, I proudly put the vodka in the freezer, saw that Old Mother Hubbard's cupboards were bare, and headed to the grocer...the liquor store was next door, so I popped in there to check and see what a GREAT DEAL I got on that "duty free" bottle....and dis covered that even after paying taxes on the very same bottle....I would have saved a little less than $10 if I had just bought it at home...and almost $12 if I had gone to Costco....so much for "duty free" on a cruise ship, eh?
How highly are tabacco and alcohol taxed in the US? Does it vary from state to state? Just out of curiosity.
Tobacco, not as much as you... Here a pack of 20 is just over $5. I don't know about alcohol cuz I don't drink. It does vary from state to state too.
Vipes sir cost before tax in dc, northern va, and md is $2.38 for a premium brand, after taxes and depending on what kind of promotions the company is running with the seller the avg price is $6.50 in dc, 6.12 in northern va, and 7.34 in md.
And I once bought a pack in Las Vegas. You wanna try to avoid that if you can. LOL
You wanna avoid buying them at casinos. The one we have here sells a pack for $8. That's crazy.
Vipes, taxes do vary from state to state. From what I could gather from a quick Google search it looks like the Federal government has a set $1 tax and then states have their own tax that varies from $0.17 all the way to $4.35 per pack (20 cigs). And it looks like alcohol varies state by state as well.
I hope it's ok to post this. This is a pretty interesting table although it's outdated.
In the early 70s a pack of smokes "on base" was a quarter...a carton at the BX was $2...I remember how "outraged" I was when I had to buy a pack from a vending machine at the airport for a DOLLAR A PACK!!
The last packet of 30's I bought before I started vaping in February cost $21 at the service (gas) station.
When I first started smoking all those years ago, I remember them being $1.99 a packet.
