Oh my, Via, you do lovely work.
Oh my, Via, you do lovely work.
Without boring you to tears, detailing the different styles shown...generally this style is called "Norwegian Rosemaling" (rose painting"....no, I do not normally sell my stuff...as many of you know...folks would prefer to buy something cheap from walmart or target than to pay an artist for materials...(most of the boxes I purchase are pine, but are excellent quality..,so are in the $40 range for just the wood...the tray that I entered into the state competition was well into the $200 range (the first photo) and because I am not "a big brush", folks hesitate making an investment...
Friends and family usually get these as gifts...but, as of last year, THAT came to an end....
I made quilts one year...
Crocheted shawls, mittens. Pillows and bedspreads...anther year
Jewelry boxes the next...(the matching bbrown/blue boxes plus some others not posted here))...
But, I got my (artists) feelings hurt last year...and decided that there would be no more quilting/painting/crocheting as gifts anymore....a check in a Christmas card will have to do from now on...
Have any of you ad to make that decision too?
(sorry to hijack thread)
I have a few talents... my passion is fire dancing, my love is photography... you can see examples of both at www.Flickr.com/whistlesphotography

Sorry to hear it Via :( Since I have no talents I can't say I've run into that problem ;)
Although, last night I told a friend that I thought about making her a duct tape purse (an 8+ hour project, which is no easy feat with my busy life) in her favorite color for her bday. She honestly told me that she would never carry around a duct tape purse and wouldn't carry anything less than a Coach. I completely understand her position and that's why I don't make it before I ask. I understand her position, but I couldn't ever afford a Coach for myself let alone a birthday present for a friend. In no way am I comparing your beautiful work to duct tape. You have an amazing talent! I have an excess of duct tape and time :o I firmly believe that it is the thought that counts. Some people feel entitled and don't agree with that though :( I have 2 other friends in mind that might appreciate my heartfelt and time consuming gift, I have yet to talk to them. I feel that it speaks to the quality of friend. A true friend will know that the gift means so much more than the physical object obtained. Again, I am sorry you have encountered this Via, and I mean no disrespect. Your works are absolutely beautiful! I could never dream of making something of such quality and beauty!
Awww Via and Harmony! I'm sorry ya'll got your feelings hurt! That's terrible!
Via your work is absolutely gorgeous! I especially love the boxes! (that's kind of my thing for collections!) Anyone to receive one of those as a gift from you should feel honored sugar! As far as the sewing I have always wished to learn how to quilt. Big thick fluffy patchwork quilts. I'm all about comfort! lol
Harmony you have talent girl stop that! And patience! I would never have thought duct tape could be so cool! And although I don't carry a purse (I tend to leave them places) I do from time to time carry a wallet. I'm a happy pocket girl! I never have figured out why brand name purses are so in demand anyway. I mean a bag is a bag is a bag right? It carries your junk. If your purses look like your wallets then they are awesome! And duct tape! I never have the patience to use duct tape for it's regular purpose (it does like to stick to itself!) much less something creative! Your friend has no idea what she's missing!
Harmony...have you seen the awesome prom clothes made from duct tape?????

$5000.00 scolarships for the grand prize
and there are lots more, lol.
I love duct tape. I make a dress form double from duct tape. You make it to fit each individual you are sewing for. Wrap it around them, slice it up the back, and you have an accurate replica of their body.
Sew...I guess this leads into what I do, lol. I design, write and teach things sewing related. Welll, serger related, actually. It is a special kind of machine that usually scares people. I help them be not so scared, lol.
Sergers are scary to begin with, but I wouldn't be without mine now. I used to make all my clothes, and DD's when she was little. Can't do it now with my hand problems, but I lover my overlocker (which is what we call sergers here)
So we are seamster-sisters. I have sewn home dec, wedding & prom dresses, quilts, general clothing, even a pair of slippers to match a robe I made for a gift. Such a fun creative outlet. You will appreciate the fact that I LOVE my serger. I even took it to a class with a nationally-known quilter and used it to make my quilt. Gotta love those FAST and perfect 1/4" seams - especially when you're strip piecing. The bane of my sewing life is alterations. I do enough reverse sewing, I don't want a reverse-sewing-oriented project. :scared:
Do you go to the sewing shows to teach?
Lol!! Thanks DF :o
Gator, I couldn't wait to get back to my desk to show you this!!
And look what else I found :)
Granny, I have heard of that scholarship contest. I looked into it when I was in high school, but I didn't have as much duct tape and access to the internet then. I have seen pics of people that have participated and they do some really awesome stuff with duct tape!
