If you’ve been vaping with mods for awhile, you might be ready to take it to the next level and start building your own coils. Coil building for beginners can seem a little daunting at first, but it doesn’t have to be scary! There are plenty of reasons vapers choose to build their own coils. For one, it can be more affordable in the long-run to build your own coils. Secondly, coil building can turn into a really enjoyable and productive hobby that lets you personalize the way that you vape. We take a look at some easy tips to improve your vape game and impress your friends in this short guide of coil building for beginners. Before you begin building your first coils, you want to make sure you have all the tools you need to get the job done right. There are some basic tools that every coil builder should have in her or his vape stash.
What You Need For Beginner Coil Building
Kanthal, nickel, stainless steel, etc. wire
Ohm-meter (it really helps!)
Steps for Beginner Coil Building
Cut a Length of WireUse wire cutters to snip off a length of resistance wire. We recommend kanthal wire, but nickel, ni-chrome and other wires will do just fine. Roughly three or four inches should do the job. Heat the Wire Use tweezers to secure the wire in your hand and then use a torch lighter to heat the length of wire until it starts to glow a bright orange color. This helps oxidize the wire Wrap Your Coil This is the fun part (well, vaping is the most fun part, but you get the idea). Grab your small screwdriver or thin rod with one hand, holding your wire’s end firmly against the base of the screwdriver with your finger. Then, begin wrapping the wire around the screwdriver. Wrap it around eight times, but be sure not to overlap. It’s crucial to keep each coil you make close to the last one so you can get maximum conductivity. After the eighth time around, both of your coil ends should be facing in the same direction. Grab each one and pull them so you don’t have any remaining slack. When you’re done, leave the newly made coil on the screwdriver. Install the Coil

Grab your RDA build deck and loosen the screws. Then, hold the screwdriver over the RDA build deck and put one end of your coil in the negative post hole and the other in the positive post hole. You’ll want to get it the coil as straight and even as possible in the middle of your RDA deck. Gently tighten the screws back into place. Test Your Coil This is where your ohm-meter comes in. Before you use a freshly built coil, it’s important to test your RDA on the ohm reader to make sure that it’s reading the right resistance and that there are not any shorts. If the coil resistance is reading a little off (more than .2 ohms), make sure your screws are secure and that your coil isn’t coming into contact with your posts before you test the RDA again. You can also get an inaccurate reading if the RDA is not securely screwed into the ohm reader. You may need to build another coil if this doesn’t fix the reading. Fire Up Your Coil

Once you’ve tested your coil and the resistance is reading properly, it’s time to test fire the coil. Attach the RDA to your mod and squeeze the fire button until the coil starts to glow a consistent orange color. The orange glow should start at the center of the coil and extend out to the end coils. Fire and release, then use your tweezers to gently squeeze the coil together from end to end. Once the orange glow extends evenly throughout the coil, it’s time to let the coil cool off and wick it. Wick Your Coil Wait for the coil to cool off before you wick it. We recommend using organic cotton to wick your coil. Cut a length of organic cotton that will fit tightly into your coil with around a half-inch length sticking out from either end of the coil. The wick ends should be long enough to fold over so they rest on the RDA deck, but not so long that they go under the coil and block airflow. After trimming off excess wick, add a few drops of e-liquid to the ends. Vape Your Coil Before you get to the good part, you should test your RDA again to make sure the resistance is still within range. Troubleshoot any readings that are off before you add the e-juice. Once the test reads within range, soak your wick and coil in e-juice and put your RDA deck back on your mod. The next step is the best step: VAPE ON! We will cover dual coil building in a later blog.
